TODD DESORBO • HEAD COACH

Todd DeSorbo was hired as the head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach in August 2017.

Virginia has set 16 women’s school records and 14 men’s school records in DeSorbo’s four years. The Cavaliers have amassed 179 All-American swims, 37 ACC individual and relay wins and a .750 dual meet winning percentage under DeSorbo’s tutelage.

The Virginia women have won three ACC team titles, two ACC Swimmer of the Year Awards and two ACC Freshman of the Year honors. UVA’s men have recorded their best finishes at the ACC Championship in seven years and NCAA Championship in 10 years. In total, UVA has 24 individual and 13 relay ACC titles along with five NCAA individual titles and the first NCAA relay champion in school history during the last four seasons.

In his fourth year at the helm of the program, DeSorbo guided the women’s team to its first national championship and the first national title for an ACC team in the sport in NCAA history. Virginia won six national titles in individual and relay events at the NCAA Championships, the most ever by an ACC program. The Cavaliers had 12 athletes named to CSCAA All-America Teams (10 first team and two second team). Virginia also won its third women’s ACC Championship in four years, and league-record 17th overall.

JOHN CARROLL ASSISTANT COACH / CAMP DIRECTOR

Carroll spent three seasons with UNC Wilmington before joining the Cavaliers’ staff for the 2023-24 season. While at UNCW, Carroll and the coaching staff transformed the Seahawks in his three years with the program. During the 2022-2023 season, UNCW won the Colonial Athletic Association Championships combined title for the first time since 2006.

Carroll’s distance group thrived at the CAA conference meet. The Seahawks came away with event victories on the men’s and women’s side in the 500 Free, 1650 Free and 400 IM events. The UNCW staff won swimming coaching staff of the year awards on the men’s and women’s side. Each side scored the most points in team history.

The 2021-2022 season was another banner season for the Seahawks. Carroll and the Seahawk coaching staff were honored by the CAA coaches as the men’s swimming staff of the year as the Seahawks breezed to the program’s first CAA title since the 2014 season.

TYLER FENWICK

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

Tyler Fenwick joined the UVA coaching staff in August 2017 as the men’s and women’s associate head coach, working with the mid-distance, distance and individual medley swimmers.

Fenwick helped guide Virginia’s women’s team to the program’s first NCAA Championship in 2020-21. UVA won six national titles in individual and relay events at the NCAA Championships, the most ever by an ACC program. The Cavaliers had 12 athletes named to CSCAA All-America Teams (10 first team and two second team). Virginia also won its third women’s ACC Championship in four years, and league-record 17th overall. The men’s team had its best finish at NCAA’s since 2011, placing ninth overall, and picked up 28 All-America honors. Matt Brownstead won ACC titles in the 50 free and 100 free and the men’s team had five All-ACC honors.

The women’s team won its second ACC title in three years during the 2019-20 season and 16th title in program history. The women’s team set an ACC record for most points scored at the conference championships as the team captured 10 ACC titles and earned 17 All-ACC honors. Fenwick also helped the men’s team to its best finish since 2013, placing second at the conference meet. He coached Ted Schubert to a pair of ACC titles as the senior won the 200 and 400 IM. The men’s team earned six All-ACC honors at the meet.

JAKE SHRUM • ASSISTANT COACH

Andrew Sheaff joined the Cavalier coaching staff in April of 2018 after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the program the year prior.

Sheaff helped guide Virginia’s women’s team to the program’s first NCAA Championship in 2020-21. UVA won six national titles in individual and relay events at the NCAA Championships, the most ever by an ACC program. The Cavaliers had 12 athletes named to CSCAA All-America Teams (10 first team and two second team). Virginia also won its third women’s ACC Championship in four years, and league-record 17th overall. The men’s team had its best finish at NCAA’s since 2011, placing ninth overall, and picked up 28 All-America honors. Matt Brownstead won ACC titles in the 50 free and 100 free and the men’s team had five All-ACC honors.

Sheaff helped the women’s team win the 2020 ACC title, the program’s 16th conference win. The Cavaliers set an ACC meet record for most points scored at the meet. Paige Madden was named the ACC Swimmer of the Year and ACC Swimmer of the Meet, while Kate Douglass was named the ACC Freshman Swimmer of the Year. The men’s team earned its best finish at the ACC Championships since 2013, finishing as the conference runner-up. Combined, Virginia recorded 12 ACC titles and 23 All-ACC honors.

COURTNEY CALDWELL
 • ASSISTANT COACH

Caldwell was named an assistant coach in May 2023 after serving as two seasons as a volunteer assistant for the Cavaliers.

In her two seasons with Virginia, Caldwell has been part of Virginia’s two NCAA Championships on the women’s side. She helped coach three swimmers to individual NCAA titles and saw the Cavaliers sweep all five relay events in 2023 at the NCAA Championships. During the NCAA Championship run, Virginia dropped eight NCAA, American and US Open records. UVA saw 12 swimmers earn All-America honors and 47 total honors throughout the week.

Caldwell joined UVA’s staff for the 2021-22 season as a volunteer assistant, which saw Virginia’s women win seven NCAA individual titles and four relay championships. That season the Cavaliers scored the most points in UVA history to win the NCAA team Championship. Virginia had 12 swimmers earn All-America honors with 48 total honors that season.
